The Department of Mechanical Engineering at National Taiwan University, formed in 1943, is active in both research and teaching. The department now graduates an average of 150 undergraduate students annually and has over 180 graduate students performing research work in the engineering sciences.

Currently, the department has 52 active faculty members. The faculty are divided into 5 teaching interest groups: Solid Mechanics Group, Mechanical Design Group, Manufacturing Group, Thermal Fluid Group, and Aerospace and Control System Group.

The Department pursues fundamental, applied and commercially sensitive research intended to advance the understanding of engineering, raise the competitiveness of Taiwan national engineering businesses and to train research engineers to the highest national and international standards.
