台大機械系新進老師簡介—廖洺漢 助理教授

公告內容

Dr. Liao began at NTU in 2011 as an Assistant Professor. Prior, from 2007 to 2010, he took the responsibility on the advanced device development in Research & Development Center at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. He has published about 20+ journal papers, 40+ conference papers, 10+ US patent, many different awards.

Dr. Liao’s research focuses on the advanced nano-device development including electrical devices and optical devices. In the area of electrical semiconductor devices, Dr. Liao developed the N28 technology node devices in TSMC. He focused on the strained Si theory, layout dependency optimization, and junction dopant diffusion simulation. With his contribution in the device design, the leading world N28 technology devices has successfully developed and demonstrated in TSMC around the end of 2010. For the student from the department of mechanical engineering, Dr. Liao believes that we can catch the best opportunity to show our unique technology such as strained Si theory in our industry.

For the optical devices, Dr. Liao focused on the Si based light emitting diodes development. The combination with optical Si devices and electrical Si devices on the same Si chip is the great dream for the human to do the different application such as optical interconnection. Si based optical devices has many advantages. Dr. Liao used the metal-insulator-semiconductor structure to do the tunable light-emitting diodes during his PhD study in Prof. C. W. Liu’s group in NTU. His outstanding research work had accepted and published in best conference paper: IEDM. With the cooperation of Ge in the Si devices, the energy-gap of the material has been changed. Therefore, the characteristics of optical behavior and electrical behavior are also been influenced. Based on the theoretical calculation, the band structure and quantum effect are fully understood and explained. In Prof. Liao’s group, he wants the student has the high capability to understand the basic device physics and material analysis skill, which are also very important for the industry.

Recently, he has begun interested in the bio-sensor for the real application. The online monitoring methods, with a focus on light image monitoring as a beginning, will be developed. The research targets at the multi-monitoring including light and voice. This idea is to imitate the human behavior of experienced technicians in manufacturing processes and to achieve both manufacturing and quality assurance at the same time. With the successful bio-sensor development, the electric-ears and electric eyes is not the dream but is the practical product.
