Reminders for Taking Liberal Education and Core Competencies Courses

  1. Undergraduate students that are already enrolled or newly admitted in the academic year of 2016 shall earn 15 credits for Liberal Education courses. II. Transfer students (including those transferred from another school or department) shall refer to requirements based on the peers' academic year of admittance.

Those who apply for leave of absence in the first semester (fall semester) upon admittance shall refer to the requirements based on the academic year of their re-enrollment.

  2. Liberal Education courses consist of eight core areas, including “Literature and Arts (A1),” “Historical Thinking (A2),” “World Civilization (A3),” “Philosophy and Moral Reasoning (A4),” “Civil Awareness and Social Analysis (A5),” “Quantitative Analysis and Mathematics (A6),” “Physical Science (A7)”, and “Life Science (A8)”.

Students shall refer to “List of Core Areas Designated by Each Academic Program for Liberal Education Course Requirement” promulgated by the Center for General Education and take Liberal Education courses based on the core areas designated by their academic program. Students must take courses in the three core areas designated by their academic program. Once students complete at least one course in each of the three designated areas, they are exempted from the restriction of designated areas and can choose any course in any area.

  3. The limitation in the preceding provision does not apply to international students.

  4. If a course is cross-listed in two core areas, students can choose it to be counted to either one.

  5. Credits earned from Freshman Chinese can be counted to fulfill the credit requirement for the core areas from A1-A4, and vice versa.

  6. Starting from the academic year 2017, "Freshman Chinese" was re-organized as “College Chinese” in two separate courses: College Chinese (I) and College Chinese (II). Students shall take at least one course of College Chinese. If students take two College Chinese courses, they can substitute up to 3 credits of College Chinese in fulfillment of the same number of credits in any one core area between A1-A4.

Overseas Chinese and international students who want to take a College Chinese course shall follow the NTU Guidelines for Assisting Overseas Chinese and International Students to Take College Chinese Courses.

Students have two curricular paths for College Chinese and Liberal Education courses:

    1. Six credits from College Chinese and twelve from Liberal Education courses (in two designated core areas)

    2. Three credits from College Chinese and fifteen from Liberal Education courses (in three designated core areas)

  7. Credits earned from professional courses that have been approved and promulgated by the Center for General Education may be counted towards the credit requirement for Liberal Education courses. (More information about the courses is available at the website of the Center for General Education.)

  8. Up to six credits earned from Core Competencies courses may be counted towards the credit requirement for Liberal Education courses.

  9. In case a general course or a professional course is a course required or provided by the student's academic program, then the credit(s) may not be counted for the credit requirement for Liberal Education courses even though the course is in the approval list for credit transfer (where credits from a general course may be counted for a Liberal Education or Core Competencies course; a professional course may be counted for a Liberal Education course).

  10. An excess of required course credits or credits that cannot be counted for Liberal Education or Core Competencies courses will be counted for elective courses. In the event the student’s academic program sets specific provisions regarding the Liberal Education requirement, the provisions shall prevail.
