Successful engineering products require well-planned machining procedures and careful selection of materials. The compulsory course Workshop Practice is provided for freshman students. In this course, students learn to operate machining tools and understand mechanical manufacturing processes through hands-on practice or on-site demonstration by our technicians and teaching assistants. Students shall appreciate workflow design and learn the concepts of precision and tolerance through parts machining and assembling, in preparation for advanced design and manufacturing courses. Other courses that take place here include Practice of Mechanical Engineering, Practice on Advanced Industrial Machinery, Practice Project on Machining, and Metalworking Practice. Most importantly, the facilities are open to students for completing their course assignments, and engineering projects and research, within and beyond their course curriculum.
The Workshop also provides technical training courses, manufacturing consulting, and services on campus for a broad range of teaching, research, and testing needs. Now, the current facilities are categorized into a traditional machining sector, a CNC machining sector, and a computer studio. In the traditional machining sector, there are more than 70 machines including lathes, milling machines, planers, grinding machines, vise benches, drilling machines, welding equipment, sawing machines, and sandblasting machines. The CNC machining sector is equipped with a CNC machining center, a CNC 4-axis turn-mill machine, a ZNC electric discharge (EDM) machine, a CNC wire-EDM machine, and a laser cutting machine.
