The New Energy Center (NEC) was established in 2000 under the support of the Energy Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs. The NEC focuses on research and development in new and renewable energy technologies (solar energy, advanced air-conditioning, distributed energy system, and LED lighting) with emphasis on system integration. The NEC closely integrates academic research energies and bridges the gap between academia and industries through product-oriented R&D and innovation. The NEC has developed many technologies, including the heat pump, solar collector, sun-tracking PV system, low-cost loop heat pipe, high-power LED lighting, …, and solar ejector cooling technology. Several leading-edge technologies are also under development, including solar cooling and heating, solar home systems, and solar micro-grid under the support of the National Energy Program II of the Ministry of Science and Technology in Taiwan.
In 2008, the director of the NEC, Prof. BJ Huang, won the Global Research Partnership (GRP/CID) Award (4.5M USD) presented by King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia, at an international competition of 41 world-renowned universities. This award was granted for the development of solar building technology, including solar cooling, solar desalination, low-energy building, solar PV power system, solar LED lighting, etc. The research group includes 11 professors, 5 research engineers, and 34 M.S. and Ph.D. students. Many technologies have been developed from this award, including a fresh-air exchanger, solar PV-driven air conditioner, vacuum insulation panel, ventilated building envelope shades, solar-assisted ejector cooling, high-temperature vacuum-tube solar collector, zero-energy house (ZEH), one-axis-three-angle solar PV tracking, high-performance solar desalination, solar PV water purification, independent solar PV system, solar electric vehicle, solar charging and discharging control of batteries, …, and Si-C battery.
