Since its establishment in 1943, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at National Taiwan University has produced many outstanding mechanical engineers and researchers in the nation in both high-tech and traditional industries. Evolving with rapid technology advancements, our educational objective has been modified to provide students with fundamental knowledge across a broad spectrum of science and mechanics and of recent advances in these fields. Beyond rigorous training in five core disciplines—Solid Mechanics, Design, Manufacturing, Fluids and Heat transfer, and System Control—we also promote studies in cross-domain knowledge. The curriculum is focused on developing students’ analytical skills and integration capabilities of professional knowledge. Students are given with opportunities to be involved in laboratory experiments and project-based practice through which they learn to apply knowledge to solve real assignments or engineering problems with creativity and confidence. We educate our students to be capable of using multidisciplinary approaches to solve problems and to have a vision of industrial development and technology trends while understanding their social responsibility. The Department consistently reviews the curriculum to make improvements and maintain the standards of the IEET Educational Accreditation in 2005 (B.S.), 2007 (M.S., Ph.D.), 2011 (all programs) and 2017 (all programs).

Besides our educational mission, the Department’s faculty leads strong research teams in a broad range of fields, such as micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), precision nano-manufacturing, novel manufacturing technologies, advanced power system, biomechanics, biomedical micro-devices, renewable clean energy, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, multi-phase flow, structural integrity and reliability, robotics, intelligent technologies, and so on. The Department publishes about 200 journal papers cited by the Science Citation Index and receives about 30 patents annually.

Currently, the Department faculty includes two distinguished chair professors for research, 37 professors, 10 associate professors, 10 assistant professors, and one adjunct associate professor. We have 4 Distinguished Researchers with a total of 24 special appointments recognized by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), 17 professors with MOST Outstanding Research Awards (33 times in total), 6 professors with MOST Da-Yu Wu Memorial Awards, 4 TECO Award on recipients, 7 distinguished engineering professors from the Chinese Institute of Engineers, 10 distinguished engineering professors from the Chinese Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2 recipients of the Automation Medal from the Chinese Institute of Automation Engineers, and 15 holders of distinguished professorship at National Taiwan University. As a whole, the Department is ranked the 35th on the QS World University Rankings (2018) in the subject of mechanical engineering.
