Coming to Taiwan for one year was by far the most exciting thing I did in my life until now. After taking the plane for 22h hours, I arrived in a landscape in shades of green I’ve never seen before. The first days here overstrained me, not being able to read a word or order food myself took all my energy. But luckily Buddies and friends are friendly and very willing to help.
After setting up my life in the dorms and my courses I slowly fell in love with this country. I like to stroll around in the small streets and on the night markets trying Asian food without having the blindest idea what it’s made of. Taroko (太魯閣) is one of the most amazing places I’ve visited, a warm and sunny November weekend granted me an excellent view on the silver shimmering marble in the valley. The island Formosa combines in a unique way the beauty of coast, cliffs, jungle-like forests and high mountains, which I had the chance to witness while cycling the East Coast, climbing Yushan and on many day hikes.
People are the most beautiful scenery
Adoring the natural beauty of Taiwan, if someone asked what’s the best part about the country, I’d answer it’s the Taiwanese people. The hospitality and friendliness in Taiwan seems endless. Street vendors patiently speak their slowest Chinese to me (which I am still unable to understand) and many persons curiously ask where I am from and about my experience in Taiwan. Countless times friendly Taiwanese helped me to find my way, the right bus, or just a good meal.
Speaking about university I enjoyed how flat the hierarchies are at Taida. Compared to my home university it seems easy to talk to professors and discuss problems with them. Also, I like the applied way of teaching with many projects and homework.
After all, coming to Taiwan was the best decision I could have made almost 10 months ago, I am sure after celebrating the reunion with my family and friends I will soon miss my Taiwanese life and friends.

The brief profile---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was born and raised in the Northwest of Germany, close to the Netherlands, in a small village. During school I really enjoy learning lanugages and exploring new cultures, thanks to travling in Europa and a student exchange to India I discovered my joy in traveling. After school I wanted to collect working experience and live abroad, that's why I decided to spend the next year working in a German-French childcare in Strasbourg.
During the year I liked working with the children, but I have to admit that numbers are more my thing. Therefore I moved to Aachen to study Computational Engineering Science, a mix of mathematics, engineering and Computer science. Aachen is a great city to live with a nice nightlife, pittoresque buildings and a large number of student organizations, still I desired to see another university, so I quickly decided to go abroad for an exchange semester. I choose to come to Taiwan, because of the wide range of offered university courses at Taida and to explore a country which is still deeply tied to Asian traditions and after my expectations were still overshot.
My bio:
1995- 2013 growing up and school
2013/14 volunteer year in a childcare in France
2014- now University in Aachen
2016/17 exchange year at NTU, Taipei
